4000 MILES

Hybrid Practices for the Intercontinental
Teaching of Design and Art

4000 Miles is an interdisciplinary research project that bridges two disciplines, in two languages, on two continents, in two time zones. The projects seeks to show how a sustainable practice of intercultural thinking and global cooperation can be realised by means of a blended learning approach. Using the example of higher education in design and art, 4000 Miles aims to explore digital and material practices within asynchronous co-creation processes. To this end, lecturers form an international partnership and implement art and design studio classes that will take place within the institutions curriculum.

Goals

4000 Miles focusses on students and lecturers needs alike. Students should be enabled to build intercultural communication skills, to foster self-organisation and to gain confidence in moving between analogue and digital (design) practices. Lecturer should be supported with focus on building functional teams, maintaining a sense of presence within asynchronous learning processes as well as in the publication of hybrid results.

In order to develop the finely tuned hybrid learning environment envisioned, methodological and technical explorations will be tested and evaluated in the teaching practice of multiple iterations of studio classes.

ACTIVITIES

PARTNERS

Faculty of Design Würzburg

As a representative of the University of Applied Science Würzburg-Schweinfurt (THWS) , the consortium will be headed by Prof. Judith Glaser. As a interaction designer and researcher Glasers interest lies on processes of “oscillating” between digital and analogue practice.

Herron School of Art+ Design

The counterpart of Prof. Judith Glaser in In the United States at Herron School of Art+Design (Indiana University)  is Prof. Sydney Craig. Craigs research focuses on introducing virtual global learning projects into the curriculum for first-year students to install a global mindset early in their academic careers.

IDIS

The In-Institute for Design and Information System (IDIS) focuses on applied, interdisciplinary research in the field of digital information and communication media and works on inter- and transdisciplinary topics from the fields of computer science and communication design.
