ABOUT

Design for digital life and knowledge practices, or Digital Practices for short, focuses on the ubiquitous and in many ways invisible interfaces between people, a community or a society and the digital. In the spirit of embodiment, the conviction that knowledge and consciousness require bodies, our relationship to technology will be discussed through student projects from the fields of graphic, product, exhibition and interaction design, among others.

Special attention is paid to neo-analogue interaction. A symbiosis of code, material and form through which physical and digital events are interdependent.

In order to create not only plausible but also desirable concepts (encorporating visions of the future), the prototype is at the methodological centre of the trained design process: The prototype as a mediator between the designer and ~ the context, the concept, the project partners, the users, the stakeholders and much more.

4000 MILESHybrid Practices for the Intercontinental
Teaching of Design and Art

Duration 01.06.25 – 31.05.2025

4000 Miles is an interdisciplinary research project that bridges two disciplines, in two languages, on two continents, in two time zones. The projects seeks to show how a sustainable practice of intercultural thinking and global cooperation can be realised by means of a blended learning approach. Using the example of higher education in design and art, 4000 Miles aims to explore digital and material practices within asynchronous co-creation processes. To this end, lecturers form an international partnership and implement art and design studio classes that will take place within the institutions curriculum.

Goals

4000 Miles focusses on students and lecturers needs alike. Students should be enabled to build intercultural communication skills, to foster self-organisation and to gain confidence in moving between analogue and digital (design) practices. Lecturer should be supported with focus on building functional teams, maintaining a sense of presence within asynchronous learning processes as well as in the publication of hybrid results.

In order to develop the finely tuned hybrid learning environment envisioned, methodological and technical explorations will be tested and evaluated in the teaching practice of multiple iterations of studio classes.

Letztlich könnten Verarbeitungsvorgänge auf Art. 6 I lit. f DS-GVO beruhen.
MALLEABILITY OF TIME AND SPACE 4000 Miles (3)

»If we want to examine the structure and quality of our life, we should turn to its time structures.« — Hartmut Rosa

Time is a multifaceted concept grounded in the the physical world and elevated by the symbolic and philosophical ideas of mankind. It is an observation as well as a construct and a commodity. It forms a horizon of understanding where elements can form meaningful relationships. Time can also serve as a lens for evaluating social qualities.

»Modernity is about the acceleration of time,« wrote Peter Conrad. In this context, the real-time of today’s data transmission is the result of a process that began with the invention of the clock. The fact that trading companies move their headquarters towards a server farm to be able to trade on the stock exchange a fraction of a tenth of a second faster than the competition shows that not even real-time is the same as real-time. The transmitters are accelerating: the vehicles – horse – railroad – airplane – telephone – Internet. The ranges are getting longer. Space got wiped out, and time got compressed. The concept of technical acceleration is omnipresent, as is its apparent counterpart, personal deceleration.

In science and economics in particular, time is measured with a precision that is imperceptible to the human sensorium and correspondingly difficult to grasp. The idea of a fraction of a tenth of a second has little to do with one’s sense of time. Or does it? Can one consciously fall out of time? Sol (the Martian day) is 39 minutes and 35 seconds longer than on Earth. Consequently, would we have ‘gained’ time on Mars? What quality does time hold for individuals, communities, and society?
4000 Miles has evolved into a third iteration; it is a continuing collaborative project between Prof. Sydney Craig ↗, Herron School of Art and Design in Indiana, USA, and Prof. Judith Glaser, Faculty of Design Würzburg (THWS), Bavaria, Germany. These educators are pursuing high-impact practices for engaged learning as they develop intercultural, multi-disciplinary exchanges meant to encourage and embrace a global mindset. Students from both universities has been challenged to explore the concepts of time and space through object studies and creative problemsolving as they work in teams across 4000 miles and through a variety of art and design media.
The project is part of the Virtual Global Learning Exchange (VGLE). The course culminated in a visual art and design exhibition ↗ at the Eskenazi Fine Arts Center, Indianapolis, USA. Take a virtual tour ↗.

In a world that is constantly changing, we need products that grow with us. Under the motto »Change is the only constant,« yaced was created: a modular bag that is flexible, adaptable, and sustainable.

Straps, bag modules, and bottle holders can be removed, exchanged, or used separately. Further add-ons are planned, such as a removable wallet. This means that yaced can always be adapted to current needs.

The material is intended to be particularly sustainable, which is why there are several samples of bioplastic that could be used as material for the bag.

»[…] but when a beginning is made— when the felicities of rapid motion have
once been, though slightly, felt— it must be a very heavy set that does not ask
for more.« — Jane
Austen

The new
makes itself known to all our senses. As environments shift, we adapt—sometimes
fully, often incompletely. Change demands we let go of pieces of ourselves. In
unfamiliar surroundings, we search for something unmoving when all else is in
motion: a foothold, a constant. Some
changes arrive like distortions, rotations, or even disfigurements. Objects
move, transform, disappear, reappear. We carry them forward—or leave them
behind. The idea for Kinetic Joyride emerged from the merry-go-round: a
symbol of life's dizzying pace.

Our project
is about change—how it touches the environment, how we respond, and how
perception twists with speed.

Immersion in the process of adaptation can yield
a blurred, yet beautiful, image—a layered moment of reality and illusion.

It is
a portrait of the joy of reinvention, shadowed by a quiet yearning for
stillness. Embroideries
capture fleeting memories—echoes of places where we felt alive, at ease. Places
that offered stability, even as they, too, continue to change. Through
arbitrary juxtapositions, an interwoven image forms—one that reflects a shared
sense of immersion. A rotating pentagonal mirror frame allows the viewer to
modulate the speed—or pause it entirely.

At the
heart of Kinetic Joyride lies movement, fluidity, and a threefold
dialogue: How do
objects change when our surroundings change? And—do we move with them?

Where
Childhood Hides

Anna
Heilmann, Isabella Freshour, Jenny Monroy, Mia Griffith

This tent,
sewn from many individual pieces of fabric, holds a deeply personal archive:
each sheet carries several gel prints of childhood objects. From the outside,
the prints remain invisible. To truly see them, visitors must step inside, peek
through a sewn-in window, or even crawl in just like children exploring hidden
places.

Suspended
in the center of the room, the tent invites quiet curiosity. Its minimal
interior avoids distractions, leaving space for atmosphere, light, and
reflection.

More than just a shelter, it becomes a nostalgic vessel designed to
awaken memories, associations, and a sense of shared past.

	By creating
a space that must be physically entered, the project encourages visitors to
connect with their own childhood and embark on a small journey through time.

Prism of Fate

Amire Koncici, Piper Syester, Taylor Owen

The sculptural column tells the mythological concept of fate through three symbolic layers: Clotho in the birth of Erichthonius, Lachesis in Chronos, and Atropos in the fall of Icarus. Each layer of the column represents one of the three Moirai – the Greek goddesses of fate – and ties their function to a moment of mythological transformation: Clotho, the spinner of life’s thread, is embodied in the secretive and miraculous birth of Erichthonius, a figure born from earth and divine conflict. Lachesis, who measures the thread, is reflected in the abstract concept of Chronos – time as a force of order and duration. Finally, Atropos, who cuts the thread, appears in the fall of Icarus, symbolizing the inevitability of mortality and the limits of human ambition. Chromatic, mirror-like foil covers the surface of the sculpture, refracting light into constantly shifting colors. This visual element creates a changing experience depending on the viewer’s position and time of day, evoking the fragility, complexity, and changeability of fate.

The material's reflectivity invites self-perception and introspection, placing the viewer within the narrative and questioning their own relationship to time and destiny. The sculptural form itself draws on the visual language of both classical columns and modern abstraction. It intertwines linear storytelling with a cyclical understanding of time – a temporal paradox in which beginnings and endings dissolve into one another. The column does not simply tell a story; it performs the mythic structure of fate through light, form, and symbolism. In doing so, it becomes a vessel for timeless questions: How is life shaped? Where does agency end and destiny begin? And can we ever truly step outside the thread that binds us?

Time has absolute value. There is nothing more precious than time, and spending it with others is a privilege.

Spending Time is an interactive object that uses sand as a metaphor for time. The objective of this game is to spend as much time together as possible. An eccentric funnel at the top is filled with sand. By rotating the funnel using the grip ring, you and your friends can control where the sand flows. A balanced plate at the bottom collects the sand. Your objective is to keep this plate balanced for as long as possible by adjusting the sand's flow.

If the plate tips over, you can try to restore the balance or end the game. Spending time together is not just a side effect of the game, it is the objective itself. Spending Time wants you to appreciate the time people spend with you and to offer your time to others.

We worked with concepts relating to time and
space. These terms stood in contrast to each other. Their abstraction created a
kind of pattern that was brought together in a large-format tablecloth.
This carpet is complemented by cyanotypes, which also capture the theme
of time and space. Collected everyday objects such as tickets, receipts or
admission tickets are visible on the cyanotypes - traces of places where we
have actually been. These objects document specific moments and refer to our
personal movement through space and time. It is about capturing fleeting things
and transient memories - transforming them into something permanent.

This project is a poetic exploration of the invisible relationships that shape our existence between past and future, self and other, memory and possibility. This exchange, subtle yet ever-present, does not follow a linear path. It unfolds like a conversation: nonlinear, layered, and alive. It is a cycle of receiving and offering, of learning and letting go, of transformation across time. At the heart of the project lies the spiral, a symbol as ancient as it is universal. It speaks of growth and continuity, of motion without end, of beginnings that emerge from endings.
The spiral becomes the visual and conceptual core of the work, capturing the quiet rhythm of change. To give this idea tangible form, the project turns to the most familiar of objects: cutlery. Forks, knives, and spoons, tools we touch daily, often without thought, are transformed into vessels of meaning. They become carriers of memory, gestures of care, and symbols of shared experience. The spiral is embedded into each object, not merely as ornament, but as an invocation: a reminder of our place in the ongoing flow of giving and receiving.

This project raises questions about how we relate to the things we use and to the world we shape through them. It invites us to consider responsibility: not just for what we take, but for how we give back. It suggests that design is not only a matter of function or aesthetics, but of values, relationships, and intention. Each object becomes a touchpoint in a larger conversation, about memory, continuity, and the ways in which we leave traces in the world.
Ultimately, vom nehmen und vom geben speaks to the profound truth that we are all part of a larger process: one that is dynamic, porous, and interdependent. In everything we do, we inherit, we alter, we pass on. So in this endless spiral of exchange: what does it mean to truly give? What do we carry forward, knowingly or not? And what remains of us in the hands of others, long after we are gone?

DO—
NOTHING—
MACHINESIn Praise of Idleness.

Industrialised societies strive for productivity and efficiency. In these systems, doing nothing often has a bland aftertaste or is itself subject to a strict schedule. We mark time for relaxation in our calendars, monitor and optimise our sleep. Have we long forgotten the art of idleness, the dolce far niente – the sweet nothing? Between studies, work, family and self-expression, where is the freedom to simply be?

The devaluation of idleness since the Reformation is a relatively recent development. In ancient times, idleness was considered a privilege of free citizens and the nobility, and essential for the development of art and culture. In the Middle Ages, the spiritual mystic Hildegard von Bingen even warned against excessive activity: »But man must beware of killing his body by too much work« (1).

The Alcoa Solar Do-Nothing Machine by Ray and Charles Eames (1957) symbolises the explorations of this course. It was not designed to fulfil a ‘practical’ function (2). It is a fascinating dance of colour and movement with no utilitarian purpose – an ode to curiosity, playfulness and the joy of pure observation of movement. The machine challenges our conventional understanding of function and utility and reminds us that there is value in pure experience. In these unstructured moments of leisure, the mind can wander and creativity can flourish.

From the aimless walk as an activity of intrinsic value, to the power nap and the sobremesa, the Spanish culture of resting after a meal (3), to procrastination, the course looked intensively at doing nothing, at leisure and at breaks and what they mean to us and our social interactions. In contrast to laziness (and doomscrolling), the projects are designed with and for the conscious decision to pause, perceive and reflect.

›The relaxing coffee break for everyone.‹

Sloma is a coffee machine that turns coffee preparation into a mindful, relaxing experience. The design was created based on the idea that people with very different approaches to coffee could be connected by a shared device, mediating between functional simplicity and sensory experience. Sloma is aimed at people with no prior knowledge who usually consume coffee casually, as well as coffee fanatics with high standards of preparation and taste. Rather than focusing on technical complexity or pure efficiency, Sloma prioritises visibility, tranquillity and accessibility. Its transparent design allows you to see the brewing process directly. Two rotating water wheels direct the coffee into the cup, lending the process a meditative quality.

The product is deliberately straightforward to use. The parts are easy to take apart and clean, and are made of single-origin materials. This makes Sloma sustainable and durable. Inspiration for the design came from a lamp and a water toy, whose clear movements were incorporated into the design.
It provides a framework through which users can engage with their coffee routine at their own pace. Preparing coffee becomes the focus of the break. It's an invitation to slow down for everyone.

Licht/Spiel is an interactive light installation that brings
playful breaks into the everyday routines of adults. Installed at bus stops –
places where people frequently wait – it invites spontaneous interaction
through projected games inspired by natural childhood phenomena like bubbles,
puddles, or pinecones. The games are intuitive, seasonal, and adaptable to the
number of people present. At night, the installation adds a second layer: soft
light circles track individuals at the stop, enhancing both presence and safety.

Licht/Spiel turns an ordinary waiting space into a moment of
pause, reflection, and connection – without requiring effort, instructions, or
prior intention. It offers a gentle reminder that playfulness doesn’t have to
end with childhood, and that public space can be both functional and poetic.

»Distraction is a strategy in Service of the work.«
Rick Rubin, The Creative Act (2023)

This project attempts to address the issue of mental blocks during creative work. Creativity cannot be forced, which can cause problems for professional creatives. We have observed and experienced that distraction can be an effective way of dealing with mental blocks. However, we live in a world of distractions, so the difficulty lies in finding the right distraction at the right time.

Krisel is a tool that gently reminds you to reflect on where you are in your creative process without causing stress or time pressure, both of which are catalysts for mental blocks. It is deliberately analogue and counteracts the abundance of digital distractions that surround us. The object itself can be used as a haptic distraction or as a token to symbolically start or end a creative flow state. However, its main intention is to serve as a gentle reminder to take an early break and avoid getting stuck in a mental block.

This project addresses a common problem in modern working life. Short breaks at home or in the office often do not feel restful and usually end with people reaching for their mobile phones. The aim is to find a better alternative that effectively reduces stress.

The central idea is to use Palo Santo wood during breaks. Also known as

›holy wood‹, Palo Santo has been used for thousands of years by indigenous South American peoples, such as the Incas, in spiritual and healing rituals. The aromatic smoke produced by burning or heating the wood is traditionally used for cleansing rooms energetically and dispelling negative energies.
The wood's calming effect is attributed to its high limonene content, which has been proven to relieve stress and anxiety. The goal is to create a simple yet effective activity for breaks. It helps clear your head and improves concentration afterwards, providing a simple alternative to scrolling on your mobile phone.

Skygge was born out of a desire to provide people with a relaxing break from their everyday lives. Through conversations with various individuals, we identified the need for time out in green spaces. This inspired our goal of designing a tool that would enable people to take spontaneous, flexible breaks in the shade right in the city. We wanted to create a product that would be accessible to all, regardless of financial circumstances. This resulted in the concept of access points, where Skygge is made available to residents and visitors free of charge. Financed by local authorities and organisations, the city becomes more liveable for everyone.
Using Skygge is quick and easy: simply scan the QR code at the access point to access the website and register for the rental system. Thanks to the electricity generated by solar panels, Skygge can also be used to charge electronic devices on the go.
The web application visually conveys the Skygge experience with clear typography, easy-to-understand user guidance, and a consistent colour scheme. The brand thus conveys a feeling of summery lightness and simple handling.

Flare is a kinetic mobile that acts as a mindful timer for people with ADHD. It divides the day into 45-minute work sessions, each followed by a 10-minute break. At the end of each unit, a soft light comes on and the mobile starts to move. These calm movements encourage you to let your gaze wander, helping you to enter a meditative state. By focusing on Flare's gentle movements, users are encouraged to consciously disconnect from their mobile phones and external stimuli, creating a calm and grounded break between tasks.

The starting point for my project was the question: How can I express the signals and sensations of my body and invite others to empathise with my physical experience and consciously perceive their own?
I began with guided body meditations. As I tuned into these states, I drew intuitively and directly, without striving for perfection, but rather from the moment. The materials I used included wax crayons, paper, cardboard, and later also a hot glue gun and various textured surfaces. The original plan was to create a large canvas painting with haptic elements. But in the course of the process, I realised that the sketches, artefacts and fragments that emerged during the experimentation already had their own powerful expressiveness. Each drawing became an immediate imprint of a specific physical sensation: spontaneous, uncensored and direct.

Instead of working towards a final piece, I consciously decided to collect these intuitive artefacts. The 30 finished drawings represent different states of my body, tension, lightness, pressure, flow – captured in the moment. In this project, I not only learned to feel my body more consciously, but also to actively use breaks by drawing in precisely these moments.
Körperl(ich) invites us to refocus on feeling – away from constant thinking, towards the body.

Closeness, touch and affection are basic human needs. Yet in today's society, these needs are often met with prejudice, sexualisation and romanticisation. Touch is often only accepted and experienced in romantic sexual relationships, despite the fact that it could be so much more. During the development of a cuddle-object, I created various prototypes and experimented with different materials, sizes and fillings. Magnets sewn into the fingertips and the tops of the hands enable the cuddly toy's hands to interlock and hold each other. The teddy fleece provides structure and depth to the piece, and feels comfortable without being overly synthetic. Abstract patterns are incorporated into the connecting piece between the hands, tying in with the magazine's illustration style.

The magazine explores topics such as the biological and psychological effects of touch, and provides an overview of interpersonal touch. It also questions learned rules, values, boundaries and spaces to raise awareness of ourselves and others. Uta Wagener's book Fühlen – Tasten – Begreifen (Feeling – Touching – Understanding) was central to this, providing the basis for the magazine's content accompanying the cuddle-object. As the topic also touches on very personal and intimate levels, I decided to explore it through my own lyrical texts, creating an emotional depth.

This project explores the connection between observation, language, and imagination. Kopfhoch (Head Up) is a workshop box that encourages participants to find stories in the clouds and experience the playful, open-ended nature of writing. The starting point is the question: What happens when you see the sky not just as a weather phenomenon, but as a reflection of your inner life, memories, and imagination?

The box is intended for writers, learners and storytellers, and can be used in German lessons as a creative introduction to literary writing, or in therapy as a reflective tool. It contains a magazine with five chapters (including ones on sky gods, clouds on other planets, and idioms related to the sky); cards with narrative prompts; visual cloud shapes that can be used to build narratives (based on methods such as narrative exposure therapy); and cloud Polaroids to inspire you.

The box's design is clear and almost ethereal, and its approach is open: it does not seek to guide, but to accompany and make storytelling accessible. Thus, observing the sky becomes an invitation to tell stories, to remember and to transform.

	Zwischen Traumwelt und Realität

Escapism is the act of fleeing from reality, often by immersing oneself in books, films or stories. For a moment, we immerse ourselves in another world and leave everyday life behind. This is completely normal, and even healthy. Escapism can provide a retreat, inspiration and a creative space. However, in an increasingly digital world with constant sensory overload, we are drawn ever deeper into a maelstrom of other realities. Social media plays a dual role here: on the one hand, it overwhelms us with an endless stream of information; on the other hand, it offers us a refuge where we can immerse ourselves in the most bizarre online communities.

Escapism has many beautiful, almost magical aspects. It nourishes artistic creation and opens doors to other worlds of thought and dreams. However, it is a delicate balance. How much escapism constitutes self-care, and at what point does it become an avoidance of responsibility? How much withdrawal is necessary, and how much is comfortable, or even selfish?
I want to celebrate the optimistic, perhaps even naive, side of escapism, but also encourage reflection. We should reflect on our digital behaviour, our longings, and what it means today to really immerse ourselves.

›Switch the mood – keep the mode!‹

LUNALAY is an interactive lamp with three intuitive light modes to support the transition from day to night: Relaxing Mode, Reading Mode, and Sleeping Mode. The lighting promotes stillness, relaxation and calm, inviting you to disconnect from your everyday thoughts and ease into a restful state. Two rotatable spheres create a unique play of lights: One has a textured surface inspired by kaleidoscopes and creates warm ambient light patterns. The other has a smooth surface and provides neutral, focused reading light.
A touch sensor on the base allows you to switch between modes. The light elements are modular, height-adjustable and replaceable.

A ball joint enables the light to be focused as required for either direct or indirect illumination. Drawing inspiration from natural light phenomena, LUNALAY creates atmospheric effects on surrounding walls. The lenses of the spheres were 3D-printed and tested in multiple iterations to fine-tune the light effect and quality. Combining thoughtful design with calming visual effects, LUNALAY becomes a personal evening companion, providing more than just light – it is a gentle guide to sleep.

CLOSENESS
ACROSS
DISTANCE

4000 Miles (2)

»We are like islands in the sea, separate on the surface but connected in the deep.« – William James, American Philosopher and Psychologist

Feeling connected tethers humans to the the earth. We search for shared threads that tie us to one another as we cast our mighty nets in attempts to capture a sense of togetherness. This innate need to feel a sense of community and belonging has prompted technological advancements that help humans transcend obstacles like time and physical distances. The contemporary understanding of proximity and nearness reflects a cultural shift as community is no longer defined by place, and with technology, we are able to maintain personal contact and presence over vast distances. Existing solutions, such as messenger services and video conferencing systems, tend to focus on direct communication, primarily providing efficient and explicit exchange of information. However, social relationships require more subtle, versatile, and sensory ways of communicating and expressing emotions. (1)

The concept of closeness can be examined figuratively and metaphorically, for it encompasses the following: (A) the state of being only a short distance or separation in terms of space or time; (B) the kind of affection or intimacy in a relationship; (C) the attentive and thorough way of being (2). Within the course, students explored these different lenses through observation, creativity, and artistic production. The aim was to explore and develop concepts that enable the maintenance of meaningful social relationships across spatial distances, which drive and strengthen participation, neighborliness, cooperation and solidarity within a transcontinental community.

Whether it‘s a weekend brunch or a quick weeknight dinner, the benefits ofcoming Together around the table are undeniable. It strengthens our friendships, family connections and has a lot of positive effects on our wellbeing.
The magazine Dinner Time features four unique dinners from different cultures around the world. While each meal and setting is different, they all have one thing in common: they bring people together.

What food was on the table? Did each guest bring a dish? How was the Vibe of the dinner? What did they talk about? Each Team Member took photos of the dinner event and designed their own pages afterwards writing about the evening and the experience.

Exploring the theme ›closeness across distance‹, the project blends the literal act of ›falling into place‹ with the figurative journey of finding belonging.

Each piece reflects a unique and personal story of transition, exploring the emotional and physical journeys of moving from one place to another. As the pieces come together, they symbolize the shared experiences of navigating change, bridging cultural divides, and creating closeness despite distance.

Created by students from two different continents, the puzzle reflects a collective narrative of unity through collaboration and serves as both a literal mechanism and a metaphor for finding connection.

»Nostalgia is a way of connecting our past to our present, offering warmth and familiarity in a changing world.«

Our subproject, Nostalgia, revolves around the creation of a flipbook that explores the emotional depth of shared memories. Nostalgia is a powerful, universal experience that bridges generations and cultures, allowing individuals to reconnect with their past and find commonalities with others. By capturing moments that define childhood—music, outdoor play, media/TV shows, food, and the senses (smell, sight, taste, hearing, and touch)—we create a tangible representation of how memory shapes identity.

This project is rooted in the idea that nostalgia fosters human connection, even across vast distances. While modern technology enables communication, it often lacks the sensory depth needed to evoke true emotional closeness.

Through a playful and artistic approach, our flipbook highlights how simple, everyday experiences can trigger deep feelings of warmth, familiarity, and shared humanity. Each page invites the viewer to engage with textures, visuals, and themes that bring personal and collective memories to life.

By translating nostalgia into a creative medium, we aim to demonstrate its role in shaping relationships, cultural heritage, and personal reflection. Regardless of where we grew up, childhood memories hold significance, reminding us that while we may be separated by geography, we remain deeply connected through the emotions that define us.

Pulse of Us is an interactive project that represents the idea of emotional closeness between people across the globe. Addressing the growing presence of video surveillance, the project investigates how shared emotions can create a sense of connection.
To demonstrate its functionality, the project focuses on six core emotions: anger, happiness, sadness, surprise, fear, and disgust. Using facial recognition technology, the project captures and interprets emotional expressions, translating them into abstract visual shapes that represent emotional exchanges.

These visuals are then displayed in real-time, enabling participants to connect through shared emotions, even at a distance.
Pulse of Us explores the intersection of technology, emotion, and connection, encouraging a deeper understanding of our shared humanity.

Visualizing Collective Sorrow

Weltschmerz is a german word for the experience of melancholy and weariness towards the state of the world. It refers to the emotional weight that comes from comparing the world as it is with an idealized version of how it could be. In today’s digital age, this feeling is often amplified by the constant flow of news and media, leaving many overwhelmed or disheartened by global events. In times of war, climate crisis, rising numbers of femicides, right wing politicians gaining power Weltschmerz can arise quickly.

But how do people experience Weltschmerz? What emotions does it evoke? And how do they perceive the world in its current state? This Project is an attempt to visualize Weltschmerz as collective sorrow. We asked people to choose one emoji to represent their feelings and write a short explanation why they chose this specific emoji.

These collected responses formed the basis of our project – a mobile that brings the abstract concept of Weltschmerz into a physical, moving form. The answers are as diverse as the feeling itself. The hanging mobile shows the collected emojis translated into symbols that show Weltschmerz in all its facets – sadness and helplessness as well as feelings of hope and longing. We aim to visualize the emotional state of our time, making the intangible experience of world-weariness both visible and tangible. The result is a constantly shifting representation of collective emotions, reflecting how Weltschmerz moves through and shapes our perception of the world.

We invite you to think and explore your own experience of Weltschmerz.

This project aims to reflect the importance of
memories and experiences that connect us with
others. Each square on the scarf symbolizes a
significant moment, while the colors represent
different aspects of life: pets, achievements,
love, family, childhood, and more.
The more squares the scarf has, the greater the
number of accumulated experiences, turning it
into a tangible symbol of the emotional and personal
richness of its owner. Each fragment tells a
story, highlighting the value of the connections
and moments that shape our lives.

A Sci-Fi Puzzle

Layers of Connection is a collaborative art piece created by three illustrators from different parts of the world. Like puzzle pieces, we brought together our distinct art styles—digital and analog—to create a sci-fi universe filled with genetically modified humans and creatures.
The artwork consists of six acrylic plates, each layer adding depth and complexity. The first layers explore dual collaborations, where we learned to adapt and merge our ideas. The final layers bring all three styles together, forming a bustling metro scene where diverse characters coexist and interact.

This project celebrates the beauty of difference and collaboration, showing how unique perspectives can connect and build something truly meaningful. Each layer, like each artist, is essential—together creating a rich, layered story of shared creativity and empathy.

PLACE—
MAKING—
PLACENew approaches to the city.

What is the significance of a place for the people who use it? What
motivates people to live in a place, to appropriate it, to get involved, to
care for it?

The term placemaking covers various theories and approaches to the
planning, design and management of public spaces.
The aim is to create
public spaces that improve urban coexistence and promote the health,
happiness and well-being of its inhabitants. Special attention is paid to
the potential and inspiration of a local community. Unused space is (re)
used to change the human experience of a place, ultimately a city, and
thus shape new behaviors (1).

Using the example of the THWS Sanderheinrichsleitenweg (SHL) campus as
a (semi-)public space, the potential of the courtyard for our community,
our togetherness and our SHL microcosm was explored in concrete
terms. Prototypes were used to deliberately test aspects of production,
usability and lifecycles of products, as well as the narratives and visions
surrounding places.

A three-part series of workshops ↗ with
the artist Katharina Lüdicke ↗ took place
as part of the course. Urban space was
explored using ad hoc interventions. Supervision Prof. Judith Glaser

As an exchange student in Germany, one of my biggest challenges was adapting to small living spaces, particularly the limited kitchen counter. Cooking in such a cramped area was frustrating and time-consuming. The main struggles I faced were the small counter itself and the hot stove, which took a long time to cool down, making it difficult to manage space efficiently.

To address these issues, I developed a project that focuses on two key aspects: maximizing counter functionality and creating a practical solution for the lingering heat from the stove. My goal is not just to design a product but to emphasize the idea of using existing materials creatively. I want to inspire other students facing similar challenges to customize their spaces based on their specific needs without relying on costly solutions. When designing the product, I first identified my personal needs.

I wanted a safe and comfortable way to cover the stove, allowing me to utilize that space when it wasnít in use. Additionally, I needed a convenient place to store my cooking utensils, such as spatulas and spoons, for easy access. Another consideration was finding a suitable spot to hang onions and other vegetables stored in mesh bags, as my small kitchen lacked proper storage.

This project serves as a practical example of how small, thoughtful modifications can improve the cooking experience in tiny kitchens. Rather than focusing on the final product, my aim is to encourage students to rethink and optimize their spaces by making the most of what they already have. With creative problem-solving, even the most limited kitchen setup can become more functional and efficient.

Our project aims to get people waiting at bus stop out of their daily routine and tunnel vision. To achieve this, we chose the Mainfrankentheater bus stop and intervened on-site with three different installations: a tic-tac-toe game, a board to note down New Year’s wishes, and a speaker featuring various music genres.
Both our observations and interviews with participants revealed that we achieved our goal. The entire process was visuallized and documented in the magazine stadt halten. This publication captures the reactions and atmosphere at the bus stop, making them relatable.

weiß, wo man suchen soll.
Was
hebt hoerensagen von anderen Plattformen ab?

Veranstaltende haben die Möglichkeit, schnell und
unkompliziert Inserate hochzuladen.

The project The Garden developed out of a longing to escape the stress of everyday life at university. When researching stress-relieving factors, plants and nature in general have become a decisive factor. With this vision, we thought about the care, financing, design and organization of the winter garden.

When designing the conservatory, our focus was on the multifunctional use of the space. It should serve as a relaxing retreat in everyday life as well as being able to be used flexibly for special events. A central aspect of the concept was to take into account the different seasons in order to ensure year-round attractiveness and use.
Intensive research was required to make The Garden appealing and functional for the various target groups. We analyzed the needs of the users and carried out prototyping to test and adapt design elements.

This user-centered approach results in a space that is not only aesthetically pleasing, but also meets the requirements for comfort, functionality and sustainability.

The Garden is a vibrant green space on campus that fosters relaxation, creativity, and community connection. Serving as a hub for workshops, cultural events, and outdoor activities, it bridges academic life with the city. Through partnerships and events, it generates financial sustainability, enhances student well-being, and romotes sustainability. As a strategic project, it strengthens the university‘s reputation as an innovative leader in education, community engagement, and global sustainability.

In this project, it was aimed to find a solution for people who stay in student dormitories and do not have a place to sit and spend time outside their homes. Like a backyard.

AT THE TABLE?Wine, insects and peasant protests.

Food shapes not only our biological bodies, but also regional and national
identities. As a cultural technique, food plays an essential role in shaping
social relations; fields, feedlots and plantations characterise landscapes.
The way we produce and consume food plays a key role in shaping our
everyday world.

At the same time, there are increasing challenges to our food system:
loss of biodiversity, climate change, water scarcity, inequitable global
distribution of resources and hunger. These issues are fuelling a global and
controversial discourse about the needs, habits and values embedded in
our food systems. The fact is that our diet is undergoing technological and
social change: insect proteins, meat from 3D printers, veganism, virtual
beers with friends – the way we grow, produce, distribute, perceive and
eat is changing radically in some areas.

In At the table? we took a practical look at the current situation
surrounding our food. We traced the paths of our food from cultivation
to consumption and looked for opportunities to intervene in existing
processes. We unterstood eating as a cultural technique, as a holistic
experience, as a collective ritual. How can design help to change our food
system? What might alternative ways of growing, producing, distributing
and consuming food look like? What cultural and sensory aspects of
food could be designed with global justice and regional identity in mind?
What about the social aspects of food sourcing and preparation? What
potential does ›the digital‹ hold for rhythms and rituals around food and
eating?
The course included an excursion to the
Schenk Winery ↗ in Randesacker. We would like to thank Thomas Schenk for his open and heart warming insight into their production.

We would also like to thank cacao entrepreneur and activist Lydia Amenyaglo ↗ for her amazing insight into the work of the Ghana Food Movement ↗. The full talk is available here ↗.

We all love fish but...what do we do if fish stocks continue to decline? What alternatives would become an option in future? The current situation of the fish population in our ocean has led me to this product. Labshi is the representation of fish that is artificially produced in the laboratory. A food of the future. The product is intended to make people aware of the current, worrying situation of overfishing and declining in fish stocks. It is to be understood as a possible consumption of our excessive consumption of wild fish. Labshi could soon become a reality.

home to go is a service, that makes it possible to preserve the
flavour of home while cooking by combining beloved recipes with the voices and
stories of home. With the help of interactive recipe elements, which store the
recipes in a spoken version on an NFC chip, you can cook the dishes accompanied
and enjoy the familiar voices and memories.

Via the website, home to go guides you
step by step through the process of creating your own recipe element. Detailed
instructions with tips are provided for the recording part in the form of a
recording guide. Afterwards the development of the recipe element begins: The
audio file sent in is edited to provide the best possible accompaniment for
cooking. The finished audio file and the list of ingredients are installed on
an NFC chip in the element, so that the data can be called up later by simply
holding it up to a smartphone.

As a final step, a miniature model is generated
from the photos of the dish, which sits on the element. This allows the modules
to be kept apart and also has a decorative function. home to go wraps the finalized element when it is ready and sends
it to the desired address.

Fermentation brings people together and creates communities. In our Ferment Eck project, we explore how fermenting food not only creates healthy products, but also builds a strong sense of community. Sharing knowledge, recipes, fermentation spin-offs and experiences creates a network of people who support and inspire each other. Our Ferment Eck promotes traditional and sustainable methods and shows how working and learning together creates connections that go far beyond fermentation.
Our Ferment Eck is a meeting place for the community to exchange ideas. It is a place to share, there are recipes to take away in the form of flyers, a magazine, as well as our fermentations and a tasting speed dating video to watch.

Picnics are a social event. They bring people together and into nature, and encourage conscious eating. FalTable creates a surface that can be used as a dining table or a base for board games, making the picnic experience easier and more enjoyable. When folded flat, the picnic table is very compact, lightweight and easy to carry and store. When unfolded, it offers maximum stability and a large table surface. The social aspect of the picnic is reflected in the table's modularity. By combining several FalTables, you can create individual shapes, a long table or a round table.

The materials used offer the properties needed to enable the folding mechanism. A fabric tape connects the different multi-wall sheets and ensures flexibility and strength while covering sharp edges. The magnetic handle makes the design portable and easy to handle, while also holding the surface plate in place.

We, Katja
and Lorenz, eat regularly in the canteen, pick up our food from the serving
counter and then put our tray on the return conveyor, where it travels off into
the unknown without us.

So, we
wondered what happens at the end of the conveyor belt tunnel. Who cuts, slices
and tastes our food every day? And above all: how do these people manage to
cook starters, a salad bar, five hot meals and desserts for hundreds of hungry
stomachs every day without anyone going away empty-handed? To find
out, we visited the Mensateria Hubland Nord and the kitchen at Würzburg
University Hospital. We also had the opportunity to interview the kitchen
manager of the Würzburg Institute for the Blind, whose kitchen is currently
being renovated.

The
resulting installation invites you to discover the world of the canteen
kitchens through an interactive and visually exciting experience. Inspired by
the everyday tray rack, pushing a tray leads to the playback of three different
videos showing our experiences in the canteen kitchens. Hanging above the tray
rack are kitchen towels with photos from the canteen kitchen - both of the
appliances and the people who work there. We used the cyanotype process for the

»If nature is understood as a fiction - whether as a desire for continuity and coherence, or as the idea that something completely different exists - then the question of how nature shapes design, i.e. the shaping of the human environment, also arises anew. If nature is not something given from the outset, but a product, even a projection of humanity, something that industrialisation has brought about in the first place, then it can also be understood as design. The fact that nature can be represented, that it can be depicted as an image, text or sign system, also contains the possibility that it can be changed and manipulated. Seen in this way, design and nature are interdependent. If we are unable to treat nature as we find it without causing lasting damage, why should we be any better at manipulating it? It seems to make more sense to be inspired by the 'model of nature' with its formal, structural and constructive laws and to respect them in order to find innovative answers.« (Museum für Gestaltung Zürich: Nature Design)

The work deals with the formal aesthetics of slime from a metaphorical point of view. The starting point of my approach was the keeping of a laboratory diary, supplemented by ideas, associations and perceptions. Microscopies, photographs and sketches support the work, which is brought together graphically in a magazine collection.

»The elementary pattern of disgust is a closeness which isn't wanted.«

Winfred Menninghaus

Disgust is a basic human emotion. I was interested in the individual, subjective, but also
highly culturally determined character of disgust. I started to observe and document the
everyday encounters I had with this emotion. An interesting statement I came across was the idea that you have to try a food eight to sixteen times until you like it. Because of
that I started a self-experiment, which I documented in photographs, texts and illustrations.
Parallel to that I continued my research to look at the impact and the background of disgust.
The change from a useful healthy protection to a dangerous distinction in the form of racism

or xenophobia was very interesting to me.
My project is a personal journey about my impressions, experiences and learnt facts about

disgust.

I chose to work completely analogue and my book is divided in three different parts. The first
part is a theoretical examination in the form of texts and associative drawings where I looked at different topics like: Is disgust a conservative emotion? The change of disgust throughout
our lives, disgust and morals, disgust and racism, the difference between disgust and anxiety, context, connotation, existential disgust and more.
The second part is a reflection of my personal everyday encounters with disgust. The third part is a self-experiment, in which I tried for about three weeks to get used to the taste of
capers.

Barbecuing in the summer is freedom. A freedom that is often denied to people living in cities. A lack of green spaces and their own barbecue or occupied public barbecue areas are the cause. The Brutzel Betty rental barbecue system provides a remedy and revolutionises the barbecue experience in cities.

The rental grill box comes complete with barbecue tongs, cutlery and plates for four people, making it possible to start barbecuing on the spur of the moment without a lot of hassle or rubbish.

Brutzel Betty is complemented by rental stations and a corresponding app. The stations will be permanently installed at various frequented locations in public spaces such as parks. Brutzelt Bettys can be picked up and returned at these stations. It will also be possible to buy coal and dispose of waste and hot ash from the barbecue at the stations.

The
photo project Ora et Labora documents the sustainable and self-sufficient
practices of a monastery that lives by the motto ›Pray and work‹. This project
highlights how the monks maintain a self-sufficient lifestyle through a
combination of prayer and hard work.

Photographs
show the monks working in the fields, where they practice organic farming to
grow their food. The images illustrate the cultivation of vegetables, fruits,
and herbs, as well as the raising of livestock such as chickens and goats. A
special focus is on traditional crafts, such as beekeeping, bread baking, and
cheese making, which not only contribute to self-sufficiency but also preserve
ancient techniques.

In
addition to agricultural and craftwork, the project also documents the
spiritual side of monastic life. Pictures of prayer sessions, meditation, and
communal worship convey how spiritual practice and physical labor are in
harmony. The photographs show how the monks, through their lifestyle, leave a
minimal ecological footprint and promote a sustainable way of life.

Ora
et Labora captures the harmony between man and nature and illustrates how
traditional ways of life and sustainable practices can endure in the modern
world. This photo project offers an inspiring glimpse into a community
characterized by simplicity, mindfulness, and respect for creation.

The kitchen table's multi-purpose role as worktop, workbench, chopping board, sewing table and social gathering place has diminished over the last century. With better living conditions and more spacious living areas, the one place where everyone gathered in the evening was divided between the study, workshop, bedroom and living room.

In five categories, The Kitchen Table zine series focuses on the kitchen table as more than just a piece of furniture. In separate series, the zines deal with the form, the objects on it, the table surfaces and traces of use, memories that take place at the kitchen table, and the table as a place of exchange from a feminist perspective. It is intended to be a collection of the kitchen table as a multi-functional object and a place of gathering, raising awareness of the importance of this multifaceted piece of furniture.

In recent years, vegan diets have become increasingly popular for ethical, health and environmental reasons. The decision to adopt a vegan lifestyle is often based on animal welfare, health benefits such as reduced risk of heart disease and diabetes, and a positive impact on the environment through reduced resource consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.

Vood. is more than just a vegan product - it is a brand for sustainability, health and ethics. The aim is to make the vegan lifestyle more accessible and attractive. We want to encourage people to eat less meat and more plant-based food without coercion.

Vood. offers sustainable and nutritious alternatives to conventional foods that have the same taste and nutrients as meat products. The mission is to combine enjoyment with a sense of responsibility. Vood. shows that vegan food can be healthy, ethical and delicious. To build a community that values conscious eating and works towards a better future. Vood. stands for quality, sustainability and joie de vivre - a little bit of a better world in every bite.

SPEAKING
GESTURES Advanced orientation in the Internet of Things

»Are we really going to accept an Interface of The Future that is less expressive than a sandwich?« – Bret Victor (1)

The objects in our everyday lives are becoming increasingly intelligent and autonomous. They are networked – exchanging, collecting and processing data – all in the background. Mark Weiser predicted in 1991 that computing power would become »so ubiquitous that no one will notice their presence« (2). As the power of technical systems increases, communication with the outside world is often reduced to the display of discrete system states in the form of icons, lights and (warning) sounds.

At the human level, subtle gestures and movements, such as the tilt of the head, the wrinkling of the nose or the slump of the shoulders, often allow us to anticipate the intention or state of mind of our counterpart and, ultimately, to cooperate.

Speaking Gestures examines the qualities that posture, movement, small and large gestures have to offer to communicate with our environment. The project experimentally explores the extent to which animation principles such as Disney, physical analogies and other forms of non-verbal communication can be used to build on intrinsic behavioural patterns and design meaningful interactions with smart objects and autonomous systems.

In addition to the identification and definition of appropriate application areas, the design of processes and interaction scenarios has been specifically investigated.

Teil des Schwarms

Elias Hansbauer ↗

Leonie Rossnagel, Lisa-Marie Schneider

»Interact with me and experience a new way of communication.«
Gestures hold great significance in our society today. They are open to various interpretations and can have completely different meanings depending on the cultural context. In our increasingly digitalized world, gestures have remained an indispensable part of communication, which led to the invention of the smiley.

Now, artificial intelligence (AI) has become an integral part of our digital world and thus our everyday lives. Where are its (own) gestures? What if communication happens differently from what we are used to? We wanted to create something that works entirely independently of our current gestures. Thus, Quest was born, bringing a new way of communication between AI and humans.

IkarusLisa Jahreiss
